Buenos Aires: It is synonymous of freedom, leisure and contact with the nature.

One of the world’s most wondrous cities, Buenos Aires is more European than Latin American. Open the phonebook and you’ll find asmany Italian surnames as Spanish ones. You’ll also find many British, German, Jewish and Japanese names.
Much like the United States,Argentina experienced waves of immigration atthe turn of the century and after the SecondWorld War. The city has many fine museums and a world-reknowned opera house. Shopping for fineleathers and furs can be fun and rewarding.

Getting there
Buenos Aires is readily accessible from the USand Canada, with major carriers flying to thecapital city daily. They offer direct flights, usu-ally with one stop en route at Lima, Rio orMiami. Gateway cities include New York, LosAngeles, Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver.
Aerolíneas Argentinasis the national carrier of Argentina. It enjoys a fine reputation forgood service both in the air and on the ground. Its private terminal at Ezeiza InternationalAirport in Buenos Aires, complete with customsfacilities, allows you to move through theentrance formalities quickly. Evening flights toBuenos Aires depart from both Miami and NewYork’s John F. Kennedy airport and arrive inBuenos Aires the following morning. There arealso morning flights that depart out of Miamion Saturday, Sunday and Wednesday.Aerolíneas offers a host of special tours whichyou should investigate.

Weather
Argentina’s climate varies by region. Located inthe heart of the Pampas along the shores of theRío de la Plata, Buenos Aires enjoys a fairly dryclimate. The summer months (Decemberthrough March) can be very hot and humid, with temperatures in the 80s and 90 grades farenheit.
The Buenos Aires winter is cool but relativelymild, with temperatures in the 40s and 50s.Heavy rainfall occurs during the winter monthsand, although rare, snow is not unheard of.The northeastern region, including IguazúFalls, is semi-tropical and humid all year long.Temperatures are lowest in July and August
Measurements
Argentina operates on the metric system. Toconvert kilometers to miles, multiply by .621.To covert meters to feet, multiply by 3.28 .

Packing
Depending on the season and regions you willbe traveling in, you will need to pack a some-what varied suitcase. For Buenos Aires and thetemperate regions, plan on light, spring-likeclothing for the summer months and don’t for-get your bathing suit. Make sure you have alight jacket or sweater for cool evenings andheavier clothes if you are traveling south. Obvi-ously, if you are planning to visit Bariloche dur-ing ski season (May through September), youwill need warm winter-wear. The same is true ifyou plan to stay in Buenos Aires during thewinter. Bring a warm sweater or jacket.

History
The city of Buenos Aires was actuallyfounded twice, first by Pedro deMendoza in 1536, then later and moredefinitively by Juan de Garay in 1580.The city did not immediately prosper. It wasthe southernmost part of the Peruvian Viceroy-alty and in 1554 the King of Spain had decreedthat all trade from Spain come via Panama .
Peru, then south to Argentina. This effectivelycut off any commercial traffic for the fledglingcity on the Río de la Plata. For 200 years Bue-nos Aires remained a small town, peopled pri-marily bycriollos, Spaniards born in Argentinaandmestizos, those of mixed Spanish/Indiandescent.It was the northwest part of today’s Argentina, along with Córdoba, that experienced thegreatest growth due to its proximity to Peru.Wheat, cotton, corn and tobacco were cultivatedhere for export.
